Sour beers have been on quite a journey in the past few years—think of it as a wacky road trip where the destination is “what on earth am I drinking?” Brewers, being the mad scientists they are, have been pushing the limits of what can be thrown into a beer, resulting in a delightful (and sometimes perplexing) array of flavors that may or may not remind you of sucking on a lemon.

Now, if you’re picturing all sour beers as liquid warheads designed to strip your taste buds down to their bare essentials, well, you’re not entirely wrong—but you’re not entirely right either. Some sour beers will indeed have you wondering if your dentist is on speed dial, while others offer just a gentle nudge of tartness, like a polite tap on the shoulder instead of a punch in the mouth.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to dive into the wild world of sour beers, exploring different styles to either help clear up the confusion or, let’s be honest, maybe just add a little more. Buckle up!

Lets start with, what is a smoothie sour? This one is easy, these beers literally taste like something you would get from an Orange Julius rather than your favorite brewery. Ingredients like Ice cream, pie filling, fresh fruit or even your favorite candy all add to the complexity of these “beers”. Not the prettiest of beers when poured into a glass as many of the ingredients will settle at the bottom of the can, but easy to look past that once you have a sip. These “adult smoothies” are packed with robust flavors. Many have a slight hint of tartness depending on the variety you choose but most are on the sweeter side (from the ingredients) than “sour”. Slang Du Jour Key Lime Pie was brewed with tons of Lime, Banana, Pear, Vanilla Soft Serve Ice Cream, Cinnamon, Lactose and Granola to taste just like pie in a glass. [6.6% ABV]

Ice Ice Prrrty Guava Lime Coconut: Alright stop. This new Ice Ice PRRRTY is packed with guava, key lime, lemon-lime slushy mix, and cream of coconut. Will it ever stop? Yo, we don’t know. Turn off the lights and you’ll still be able tell that this is next level delicious. [6.5% ABV]

Fluff Stuff: Raspberry Marshmallow Fluff Stuff leans in hard on the tried and true crazy delicious combination of fruit and marshmallows and gives us a home for all the fluffy beers we want to make. So this Fluff Stuff is – you guessed it – STUFFED with tasty raspberries and sweet & fluffy marshmallows for a perfect flavor combo we can’t wait for you guys to try! [6% ABV]

Chonk: Funky Monkey This time our lovable hefty boi is back with a completely ludicrous take on a frozen Monkey Tail dessert. This absolute unit is stuffed with banana, cacao nibs, peanut butter, black currant, plum, pomegranate, lactose, & vanilla beans for a decadent and delicious headfirst dive into the realm of absurdity!
